What Yelp announced in October
On October 20, 2026, Yelp rolled out its fall product release, which the company says includes more than 30 new features, updates and integrations. A lot of the attention went to the consumer side. TechCrunch focused on a feature called Check for Me, where an AI voice agent calls a restaurant to ask about the wait and texts the answer back to the diner.
The pieces I think matter most for small business owners are less flashy:
- A smarter Yelp Assistant. Yelp's chatbot now remembers preferences from past chats, and Yelp says its answers will draw on reviews, past conversations and real-time weather.
- Smart Lead Reply. A paid AI agent for service businesses that use Request a Quote. It replies right away, asks about the project and qualifies the lead. Yelp says it rolls out in November.
- Booking and lead integrations. Customers can book directly from Yelp with pros who use ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro, quote requests can flow into Jobber and Workiz, and the Calendly connection is expanding.
- A combined leads inbox for businesses with more than one location.
Your reviews are now part of the AI's answer
This is the change I'd pay the most attention to. When someone asks Yelp Assistant for "a plumber who shows up on time" or "a quiet place for a business lunch," the answer isn't just a list of star ratings anymore. The assistant reads what customers wrote and uses it to decide who to suggest and how to describe them.
That means the details inside your reviews matter more than ever. A review that says "great service" helps a little. A review that says "they came out the same day, explained the repair and cleaned up after" gives an AI assistant something specific to repeat to the next person who asks.
Yelp isn't alone here. Google and other AI answer tools also summarize reviews and business details when people ask for local recommendations. I wrote about that bigger shift on my AI search page. Yelp's update is one more sign that what customers say about you is becoming the raw material AI uses to introduce you.
One honest caveat: no platform publishes exactly how its AI picks businesses, and nobody can guarantee you'll be recommended. What you can do is make sure the information it's reading is accurate, recent and specific.
Smart Lead Reply and the race to respond first
If you're a roofer, plumber, electrician, mover or other service pro, Smart Lead Reply is aimed squarely at you. Yelp describes it as an agent that responds as soon as someone submits a quote request, gathers project details and sorts out serious leads. Business owners can add a scheduling link, the services they offer, promotions and their own custom questions. It's a monthly paid add-on in the Yelp Business Owner Account for eligible categories.
In the Localogy coverage of the release, Yelp's chief product officer framed the goal as "fewer missed leads, faster responses, and more booked jobs." That's the real story. Customers who request quotes often send the same request to several businesses, and the first helpful reply tends to start the conversation.
Should you pay for it? It depends on how many leads you actually get from Yelp. If quote requests come in while you're on a roof or under a sink, an instant reply could keep them from moving on. If Yelp sends you two leads a month, a quick text from you is probably enough. Either way, look at your own numbers before adding another subscription.
Don't let an AI describe you from old information
Here's the part that worries me for a lot of local businesses. Plenty of owners claimed their Yelp page years ago and haven't looked at it since. The hours are from before they changed their schedule. The service list is missing what they do best now. The last owner response to a review was a long time ago.
When a person browses that page, they might shrug it off. When an AI assistant reads it, the old information becomes part of the answer it gives a customer. Outdated details don't just sit there anymore. They get repeated.
The same goes for reviews you haven't answered. A calm, specific reply to a frustrated customer shows the next reader, human or AI, how you handle problems. That's a big part of what I do in reputation management: watching for new reviews and responding while they're still fresh.
What this means for your business
Here's what I'd do this month:
- Log in to your Yelp Business Owner Account. If you haven't claimed your page, do that first. Then check your hours, phone number, service area, services and photos.
- Answer your recent reviews. Thank happy customers with a line about the actual job, not a copy-and-paste reply, and reply to unhappy ones calmly and specifically. Keep it short and human.
- Earn detailed reviews, the honest way. Yelp asks businesses not to request reviews on its platform, so there, just make your page easy to find and do great work. On Google, it's fine to ask every customer for honest feedback and to mention what you did for them. Never offer anything in exchange.
- Decide on Smart Lead Reply with your numbers. Count your Yelp quote requests over the last few months before signing up.
- Keep every profile telling the same story. Your name, hours, services and phone number should match on Yelp, Google and your website. AI assistants compare sources, and mismatches create doubt.
Your website is still the one place online you fully control, so make sure it answers the questions customers ask, in plain language. That gives every AI assistant a reliable source to check against.

Frequently asked questions
What did Yelp announce in its fall 2026 update?
Yelp announced more than 30 new features on October 20, 2026. Highlights include a Yelp Assistant that draws on reviews and remembers preferences, an AI phone agent that checks restaurant wait times, a paid Smart Lead Reply tool for service pros, and booking integrations with ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro, Jobber, Workiz and Calendly.
Does Yelp's AI assistant use my business reviews?
Yes. Yelp says Yelp Assistant responses will draw on reviews, past conversations and real-time weather. That means the specific details customers write about your business can shape how the assistant describes you, so detailed, recent reviews and accurate business information matter more than before.
Is Yelp Smart Lead Reply worth it for a small service business?
It depends on how many leads you get from Yelp. Smart Lead Reply is a monthly paid add-on that answers quote requests instantly and qualifies leads. If you regularly miss Yelp requests while working, it may help. If Yelp sends you only a few leads, replying yourself is likely enough.
How can a Surprise, AZ business prepare for AI-driven review platforms?
Start by claiming and updating your Yelp and Google profiles so hours, services and contact details match your website. Respond to recent reviews, ask happy customers for honest, detailed feedback on Google, and keep your website answering common questions clearly so AI tools have a reliable source.
